Things which left us stumped in the 'Raazi' trailer :
The spy-romantic film will essay the life of Alia Bhatt who plays the role of Sehmat. Playing her Pakistani husband would be Vicky Kaushal who mesmerised us all with his talent in the film ‘Masaan’. Alia’s struggle while leading a double life as a spy and a wife has been showcased with sheer magnificence and intensity.
Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal’s acting prowess
This is the first time when Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal have been paired opposite each other. With such an amazing star cast, the movie will surely give us goosebumps. In fact, it is quite obvious that when two such talented stars share a screen, it's meant to create sparks everywhere, which is exactly what we got to witness in the ‘Raazi’ trailer. They look absolutely great together and their crackling chemistry has made our wait seem all the longer for the release of the film.
While some filmmakers only focus on choosing the lead actors and don’t pay much heed to the sidekicks, Meghna has handpicked some of the most talented actors to play crucial roles in the film, despite less screen time. From Rajit Kapoor to Jaideep Ahlawat to Shishir Sharma, these will surely make the movie go up a notch from what we are expecting out of it.
The True Story Of The Badass Indian Spy Who Inspired Alia Bhatt’s ‘Raazi’
The biggest information she shared was Pakistan’s plan to sink INS Viraat and her timely information helped save 'India's pride on sea'.
During one such discussion, he came across an Army officer who shared the story about his mother, Sehmat (name changed) - the protagonist of the novel and the character that Alia Bhatt is essaying.
Raazi's Alia Bhatt To Soni Razdan:
The fabric of Raazi is made up of the performances of these wonderful actors into a stunning tapestry." Alia Bhatt re-posted Soni Razdan's tweet and added: "You're the best actor mommy." Twitter said "that's adorable" and we agree. Soni Razdan makes a blink-and-miss appearance in trailer of the Meghna Gulzar-directed film.
Raazi is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka's novel Calling Sehmat, which narrates the story of an Indian spy married to a Pakistani army officer during the India-Pakistan War of 1971. Alia plays the role of Sehmat while Vicky Kaushal plays her onscreen husband.
Alia Bhatt plays Sehmat, the quiet but strong woman who braves the world of spies. The trailer leaves nothing to the imagination - there's Sehmat's father (Rajit Kapoor) impressing upon her the importance of protecting the country, her wedding to the dashing Iqbal (Vicky Kaushal) and her efforts at passing information back to India.
The trailer opens with a sweeping shot of the INS Viraat and a throbbing background score which establishes the film's war-movie tonality. We are introduced to Alia Bhatt's character, Sehmat, a seemingly unassuming young woman who's about to be thrown into a perilous journey, something she doesn't appear to be prepared for but looks determined to do.
What if she actually falls in love? What if she defects? What if she's caught? How she navigates the ostensibly terrifying road ahead form's the crux of the film, which features a great ensemble comprising Rajit Kapoor, Shishir Sharma, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Bhatt's real-life mother, actress Soni Razdan.
This true-life story of a valorous Indian Muslim girl who risked her life by marrying a Pakistani and moving to the neighbouring country to spy for her own, is a story that was waiting to be told. Wonder why it took so long? Perhaps a spineless apolitical generation of Indian filmmakers were afraid to tell a story that raises questions of nationality and patriotic pride.
And then there is Meghna Gulzar. What took her so long to blossom as a filmmaker? After two false starts, "Filhaal" and "Just Married", she erupted into a newly-forged self-expression with "Talvar".
Sikka says he felt very strongly that Sehmat's story needed to be told. "Her amazing courage and fortitude are what need to be celebrated. I'm glad that the film and the book are coming out within short span of each other and each will in its own way tell this exceptional story," he says.
When young college-going Kashmiri girl Sehmat gets to know her dying father's last wish, she can do little but surrender to his passion and patriotism and follow the path he has so painstakingly laid out. It is the beginning of her transformation from an ordinary girl into a deadly spy.
The film is jointly produced by Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions. Shishir Sharma and Jaideep Ahlawat co-star. The film is scheduled for release on May 11.
